2024 FESTIVAL

RULES & PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

PLEASE NOTE the rules and performance requirements have been updated since the 2023 festival,

so please ensure you have read the updated info before entering.

 

1.Traditional signifies that tunes must be in the Scottish idiom.

 

2.Piano players, Bass players and Drummers will be permitted to compete more than once in any class.

 

3. Trios will consist of Accordion, Fiddle and ONE of the following: Electric/Digital Piano, Double Bass, Bass Guitar.

 

4.Bands will consist of 4 to 6 players and must include Accordion and Fiddle. A Junior Band must have 50% of players under 16, one of which is the bandleader.

 

5.Fiddle Groups will consist of 4 to 8 fiddles. In addition, the following accompaniment - Electric/Digital Piano and or Double Bass/Bass Guitar.

 

6.Open Button Key Accordion Solo class is for instruments of the British Chromatic/Melodeon type only (i.e. in/out bellow movement produces a different note). Instruments of Continental Chromatic type are not eligible for this class.

 

7.No electronic instruments will be permitted except where specified in the rules. A Digital Piano, including an electronic bass option which competitors may use, will be provided for the band class (Class 16).

 

8.Own Composition class is open to competitors of any age. One copy of the tune, which must be unpublished, should be forwarded by email to naafcfest@gmail.com no later than 2 February 2024. Electric/Digital Piano accompaniment is permitted. Competitors may enter more than once in this class.

 

9.Electric/Digital Piano accompaniment is permitted for all Solo Fiddle classes, although no official accompanist will be available. If known, the name of accompanist should be provided on entry form.

 

10.The classification “Junior” signifies up to 16 years of age on the day of the competition. “Senior” classes are for players 16 years and over on the day of the competition (i.e. Senior classes are NOT open). Sections where the classification is “Open” include competitors of any age.

 

11.Photography, tape recording and video recording are strictly forbidden as per British Federation of Music Festival rules.

 

12.Unless unavoidably prevented from doing so, competitors must report to play in the correct position as set out in the programme. Failure to do so may lead to disqualification.

 

13. Scottish Junior Duet is open to both accordion and fiddle. Competitors may compete more than once in this class if they play a different instrument.

 

14.Electric/Digital Piano accompaniment is permitted in the Open RSCDS Solo.

 

15.Open Accordion & Fiddle Club Representative Class is open to competitors of all ages with a maximum of 10 members in the group - which must include Accordion or Fiddle with any other instrumentalists. Electronic instruments and amplification of instruments are permitted. Competitors can represent only ONE Accordion and Fiddle club.

 

16.Open Gaelic Waltz Solo is open to competitors of all ages, and to both accordion and fiddle. A minimum of 3 waltzes should be played. Electric/Digital Piano accompaniment is permitted.

 

17.Open 6/8 March Solo is open to competitors of all ages, and to both accordion and fiddle. Two 6/8 Marches should be played. Electric/Digital Piano accompaniment is permitted.

 

18.Any person can play more than once in the Band and Trio classes, provided they play a different instrument.

Lead & 2nd Accordion are classed as different instruments, See rule 2 for exceptions.

 

19.Classical Accordion Solo (classes 20 -23) - only ONE piece of Classical or Variety music should be played - see schedule for maximum timings.

20. Entries must be returned no later than 18 February 2024 - online at www.naafcfestival.co.uk or by email to naafcfest@gmail.com. Any entries received after this date will only be accepted at the discretion of the committee.

 

21. Payment can be made using the following methods, On the NAAFC website via PAYPAL using the payment link, making cheques payable to 

“NAAFC Musselburgh Festival” or by Bank Transfer to:

Account Number 00266048 Sort Code 83-23-16, quoting competitor’s name as reference.

 

22.On arrival competitors should register at the Reception Desk.

 

23.In all classes, the adjudicator’s decision is final.

 

 

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS TAKING PICTURES DURING THE DAY AND EVENING. 

PHOTOGRAPHS MAY BE PUBLISHED IN VARIOUS PUBLICATIONS AND ONLINE. 

 IF YOU DO NOT WISH YOUR CHILD’S (OR YOUR OWN) PHOTOGRAPH TO BE TAKEN/PUBLISHED PLEASE SPEAK TO ANY MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE. 

PLEASE COMPLETE THE RELEVANT FORM AT RECEPTION DESK TO INDICATE WHETHER YOU DO NOT WISH YOUR CHILD’S (OR YOUR OWN) PHOTOGRAPH TO BE TAKEN.
